Location: Blaenau Ffestiniog, Cwt y Bugail Quarry
Writer of the drama, Frank Cottrell Boyce is quoted as saying ?I?m chuffed to bits we?re filming it in Blaenau Ffestiniog, because it was the place that inspired the book.? Set in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, the village of Blaenau Ffestiniog grew up around the slate industry of North Wales, which top quality slate for buildings around the world. What left of the industry now are huge heaps of slate chippings and the opportunity to experience for yourself the life of a slate miner at Llechwedd Slate Caverns ? a tourist attraction just outside the village.
What was not so well known until recent times was that during World War II, priceless art was really stored here in this location in North Wales to stop it falling into the hands of the Nazi?s ? should they ever have made it across the channel to Britain.
